Cutting your wedding cake is one of the sweetest moments of your big day—literally! But believe it or not, there are a few important details to keep in mind to make sure this cherished tradition goes off without a hitch. From choosing the right cake stand to knowing exactly where to make that first cut, a little preparation can save you from a cake catastrophe and ensure picture-perfect memories. Let’s dive into the essential DO’s and DON’Ts of wedding cake cutting so you can enjoy this delicious moment stress-free!
DON’T rent or buy a tall cake stand. Make sure your cake stand is lower or it will tip over with the pressure from cutting the cake!
DO cut the bottom cake tier...not the top! You don’t have to cut all the way through, just a small piece to share.
DO pause for just a moment before cutting so your photographer can actually capture clear photos. If you jump right into cutting, it doesn’t allow for many photos.
DO make sure that your caterer has placed 2 forks, 2 napkins and a plate by the cake before you begin cutting. You don’t want to be standing around with smashed cake on your face while someone tries to locate a napkin!
DON’T cut a big piece! We know you’re excited for cake but don’t get too excited and cut too big of a piece! You only need a small piece for photos and catering should serve you a piece at your table or they can hold some in the back for you for later after they have served your guests. Most couples are too busy dancing and mingling to actually enjoy dessert so be sure to request some from your caterer!
DO ask your baker if they offer anniversary cakes. This way you can have fresh cake on your anniversary rather than trying to defrost your top tier. It’s somehow never the same as a fresh cake!
Now that you know the DO’s and DON’Ts to cake cutting you can rest assured you won’t have a cake disaster!
